There is a good chance it is un-burned diesel oil. Don't forget Diesel is just low viscosity oil. There should be no connection between the exhaust and direction the transmission is in, although...

The only difference between the later 50 HP vs the 44HP is that the 44 HP has a cylinder jacket for easy rebuild. Hope I never have to go there.
